Does ChatGPT use my conversations to train its AI?

Short answer: On personal ChatGPT accounts it can, unless you turn off 'Improve the model for everyone' in Settings, then Data controls. Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces are not used for training by default.

How to turn it off

On the web, open Settings, choose Data controls, and switch off 'Improve the model for everyone'. On iOS and Android it's in the same place under your profile. When signed in, the choice applies across your devices.

Temporary chats

Temporary chats don't appear in history, don't update memory and aren't used for training, but OpenAI says they may be kept for up to 30 days for safety.

Fine print

Turning off training doesn't delete your saved chats. And if you give thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback, OpenAI says the whole conversation may be used for training. For staff, the safest rule is still not to paste customer personal data into personal accounts.
